Review of Santa Sangre (1989) by Sebastian T — 21 Mar 2009
So often, in movies where visuals become the focal point of the film and story, the captivation dissipates. A lot of times, at least in my case, I feel like whoever made the film starts to run out in the bag of visual surprises, tricks, and imagination.
Either that, or the movie might come across as being pretensious. With this Jodorowsky movie, the same guy who did El Topo and The Holy Mountain, every scene is breathtaking and captivating. It's not as surreal as his two most well-known movies, but this movie is ultimately a gorgeous nightmare.
It is well executed, and I will be forever envious of this director's imagination and vision. I don't want to give much away, but I couldn't wait to see what was in store for the next scene, and I think this one might surpass El Topo, one of my favorites, on my list!
