Review of Salaam Bombay! (1988) by Curtis R — 28 Apr 2009
A sweeping portrait of the dismal everyday lives in the slums of Bombay, Mira Nair conveys magic with her masterpiece film "Salaam Bombay!" It tells of the adventures of young Chaipau as he struggles to make an earnest living in the streets of India, and is surrounded by drugs, filth and corruption in the process.
The accompanying narratives of the young prostitute, dubbed "Sweet Sixteen", little Manju (daughter of the prostitute at the local brothel) and drug addled Chillum weave together and intertwine to form the rich storyline of "Salaam Bombay!" Nair manages to capture the rawness of despair and certain sections of the film (no spoilers) are particularly bleak, but these factors fuel the potency of the atmosphere, and this culminates in the foundation of classicity of the film.
