Review of Sakuran (2006) by Man B — 17 Jul 2008
I really want anyone who has actually seen Memoirs of a Geisha (as I have, apparently) to counteract its ever-orientalizing venom with Sakuran. I don't know if the film is satisfyingly complex but it's visually stunning and replacing an American fantasy of Japan with a corrective vision of Yoshiwara created by a young contemporary Japanese filmmaking team and cast will do you good.
I promise.
