Review of Rio Lobo (1970) by Peter E — 16 Sep 2007
Considering how good 'Rio Bravo' is, was it really neccessary to remake it twice? This is the 2nd of Hawk's remakes, and to be honest, it's a rather flat film. To be fair, John Wayne is pretty good here, showing how relaxed he has become in these roles over the years (and despite being quite ill at the time), and some of the dialogue is brilliant (of course, it's a Hawks film) but the plain over-familiarity with the material ruins the experience completely, despite starting well (the scenes at the Train heist are cracking).
Only recommended to Western enthusiasts and Hawks fans, which is doubly sad as this was to be Hawk's final film.
