The third of John Ford's cavalry trilogy. John Wayne reprises his role of Kirby York from "Fort Apache". Now a Lt. Colonel, York is in command of a fort on the Rio Grande across from where the Apache are gathering in Mexico.
When new recruits are assigned to the base, York find his son, whom he hasn't spoken to in years is among them. Shortly thereafter, his estanged wife played by Maureen O'Hara arrives intent on taking their son home.
Things are further complicated by the arrival of General Sherman with a dangerous and illegal mission for York.
