Way before "Thelma & Louise," Polanski has made this movie about women's self-defense against men's sexual violations. The character is no doubt psychotic, but it was the people and the environment that triggered her.
Catherine Deneuve showed her talented acting skill in this early work, and it still remains to be one of her best performances.
