[REC] completely redefines and revitalizes the horror genre. It's quick to get to the scares without throwing the most dangerous elements in your face right away, using the environment and claustrophobia to build suspense.
There's only one really good way to build a successful franchise and that is to begin with a film that can stand alone - that is [REC]. The zombie thing has been overdone, and so has demonic possession, but [REC] finds a fresh way to put the two together in one really, really scary way.
