Review of Rambo III (1988) by John H — 24 Mar 2008
So bad, it's glorious. With its unrelenting hymn to the noble, selfless Mujahedin and their battle against the secular 'evil' that was the Soviet Union, this bit of Reaganite US propaganda is unintentionally hilarious, laden as it is now with ironic resonance.
Rambo nods approvingly at the martyrdom of his fellow 'freedom fighters', as they attempt to breach an impregnable Soviet Afghan base to rescue Rambo's mate. In between the highly implausible high octane set pieces, Rambo's mate lectures the Soviet General on how no invading army has ever beaten the Afghans, and how their 'noble tribes' will never submit to a brute military force.
How true, Colonel Trautman, how true... a modern classic for all the wrong reasons, "Rambo III" is a must see for those with a slightly sick, ironic sense of humour.
