Review of Punishment Park (1971) by Muhammad A — 13 Oct 2008
Cine Verite is not supposed to be flawless. This film is. It is gripping from the getgo and it does not relent for the rest of the 88 minutes. If history weren't merely repeating itself one could call it prophetic.
The issues addressed herein remain just as relevant today. With the advent of Northcom, the impending suspension of Posse Commitatus Act and the overflowing prison system, a Punishment Park may well be the less extreme of the developments some have predicted.
(Remember those Halliburton contracts to prepare mass detention facilities?).
