Review of Polytechnique (2009) by Ian G — 18 Mar 2009
C'est bon! I saw the sneak preview tonight.Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite Canadian directors around. Funny, the film length was mega short for a feature. It's only 77 minutes long! However, the superbly shot black and white cinematography was fitting and haunting to say the least.
Its editing was intense and slick. The overlapping film structure was similar to Gus Van Sant's ELEPHANTS where the three main student characters juxtaposed each others' narrative space and point of view.
POLYTECHNIQUE was fast paced, simple and suspenseful all at the same time. That you don't seldom experience with a home grown work. I also liked the film's stance on the notion that everyone was a victim to such a senseless tragedy.
Everyone should learn to embrace the empowerment of compassion, resiliency and sacrifice!
