Review of Polytechnique (2009) by Matthew B — 31 Jan 2010
Knowing the events beforehand, it was not unusual to have a feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach since the opening sequence. This dread only melted away when we finally see what happened in the engineering classroom.
All this being said, even though the film was artfully directed, it does not deserve an 80% because it produced the (expected) emotion of dread. It is Denis' Villeneuve's choice to disjoint the story and bring the audience right back into the horrible events once we believed them to be complete.
Reading about the Montreal Massacre inspired sympathy, but watching the events unfold put an indescribable weight behind it that has you thinking about this film days after the last still has run through the projector.
