Review of Persepolis (2007) by Zane U — 07 Jul 2009
Persepolis is great. Great in the way that it tells the story of an individual where the more obvious story is that of a war and a country. Great in the way that it was traditionally, paper/pencil/pen, animated.
Great in the way numerous vignettes presented personal memories that were only connected in loose ways, but combine to create an at once heartbreaking and hopeful portrait. Great in the way that Marjane Satrapi maintained creative control of her life story from the writing of the graphic novel through the production of her movie; the personal nature shines brightly throughout.
