Paul Schrader's directorial choices are admittedly interesting, but there's very little characterization done with Hearst so that by the end of the movie, it's hard to say whether she was brainwashed or actually believed in the SLA.
This may have been the point, but Hearst being such a blank slate protagonist didn't work for me.
