Review of Party 7 (2000) by Adam P — 12 Nov 2008
A funny and excellently constructed chamber piece, Party 7 introduces 7 characters early in the film (via an extended anime credit sequence not unlike that of a TV show) and spends the rest of its runtime cutting back and forth between 4 arguing in a hotel room, 2 peeping on them from a secret annex, and 1 driving on his way to kill them all.
It remains a comedy to the core though, and a strange one at that, run on bizarre dialogue and dysfunctional characters who keep it interesting. It's as if Ishii decided to take his Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl, narrow the scope, condense it to one location, and treat it as a comedy.
