Review of Paddington 2 (2017) by Katie V — 10 Jan 2018
I...was not excited to see this movie, but my children (and nostalgic-for-his-youth husband) insisted we all go. Kids' movies are not my cup of tea, but it's one of those things parents just get through because it makes your kids happy.
It's not overly onerous (unless the movie or show is particularly dreadful...looking at you, Caillou), it's just something you do. So, as I settled into the theater seat, I expected the same loud and bright, but thinly-veiled morality lesson that is good for kids and soporific for adults.
What I was met with, however, was gentle. It was unexpectedly entertaining. It actually had a story that made sense (though, outlandish in nature) and was VERY well acted. It managed to be sweet without being sacchrine, in that kindness and politeness will prevail in the end if you just persevere.
It was, and I'm as shocked as anyone, one of the best movies I've seen all year.
