Review of Owning Mahowny (2003) by Patrick H — 11 Oct 2008
An unflinching and sometimes disturbing portrait of Dan Mahowny, a bank-loan manager who scammed the system so he could satisfy his gambling needs and addictions. Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of our finest actors and does a brilliant job in the role of Dan Mahowny.
There are some perfectly executed scenes in which Mahowny is simply thinking or crying but you feel for him every second. Minnie Driver also does good work as Mahowny's girlfriend (I didn't recognize her at first with a ridiculous wig and glasses).
John Hurt is equally good as the casino manager in Atlantic City who keeps Mahowny coming back for more.
