Review of Ouija (2014) by Beth H — 07 Nov 2014
Surprisingly good movie. While not as good as it could be, it does well to scare the audience without being bloody and its PG-13 rules. While a lot of the time the plot feels like it steals from other movies, such as The Haunting in Connecticut, it's still a well-made, well-acted, and well-constructed fright fest.
Cooke gives a good performance in what feels like her first true starring role, rather than alongside bigger names (Jared Harris, The Quiet Ones; Brenton Thwaites and Lawrence Fishburne, The Signal), and Shaye (albeit a brief performance) gives an appropriately creepy one, continuing to prove her worth in the horror film world.
Whether you believe in the paranormal or not (frankly, I do), this film goes to show, don't mess with something you're unsure about. It doesn't usually end well.
