Review of On the Road (2014) by Rob L — 23 Oct 2012
A reasonable stab at one of those 'unfilmable' movies although the street furniture of modern America mitigates against transforming the action back to 1949. Also, Garrett Hedlund looks way too much the American Apparel model with his hoodie and blow dried hair and comes across about as forties as Justin Timberlake.
So - not perfect - but the quality of the source material makes for a pretty intriguing trawl through the byways of America in the post war period. My memories indicate that the sex is more up front and the drugs less prominent than in the book but drinking abounds as a weather vane. Also, the female characters are less one dimensional than they are in the book - the performances from Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Stewart are universally good.
