Review of My Scientology Movie (2016) by Richard S — 17 Apr 2017
I'm a big fan of Louis Theroux. He really knows how to get under the skin of his subjects and it seems almost effortless how he gets his subjects to reveal themselves for what they truly are. His investigation into scientology was good but not his greatest work.
There was the usual uncomfortable confrontations as members of the church tried various forms of intimidation to cease his investigation, plus there were horror stories from ex members of the church of beatings, intimidation and threats.
However, the main issue with the film is that he was never able to gain direct access. This isn't the fault of the film makers because they were obviously never going to be allowed direct access, however, this does mean the film reveals nothing new about the group.
It's still worth watching for Louis Theroux's charm and his investigative style but you'll be disappointed if you're expecting any startling revelations.
