Review of My Brother the Devil (2012) by Merlene F — 08 Jun 2012
I rarely give a 5 star review. But this is PURE CINEMA! It has everything. Complex characters, exciting story with something to (subtly) say, gorgeous cinematography (it won at Sundance) and remarkably well judges direction for a first time filmmaker! Sally El Hosaini is one for the future for sure! She reminds me of when Scorsese burst onto the scene with Mean Streets.
Also, special mention must go to the cinematographer and even more so the acting of James Floyd. He truly is an incredibly complex face and presence. He brings vulnerability to one of the toughest young characters in British cinema.
This is truly international filmmaking, unlike the usual urban crap that we are forced to try and like in UK. Bring on BAFTAs and maybe even OSCARS. I really feel it is that good.
