Review of Mr. Nice (2010) by Edmund C — 19 Oct 2010
Slow and lengthy biopic. Your enjoyment of this film will hinge on whether you are prepared to enjoy two hours of Rhys Ifans. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a biopic, in the title role he is in nearly every shot in the film, and adds some voice overs too for good measure.
The film wrestles with the problem of how to convey to a cinema audience the experience of drug taking. It pulls this off once, early in the film, but thereafter you are left with a lot of shots of Ifans smoking with his eyes shut and a grin on his face.
This can get dull. Pleased to see that Omid Djalili has succeeded Alexi Sayle as the male actor to cast in any Middle Eastern role. He plays this straight and doesn't mention car insurance once. David Thewlis does his manic Irishman act to good effect.
Probably one to watch on DVD where you can fast forward the slow bits.
