Review of Mr. Holmes (2015) by Robert S — 28 Jul 2015
What a lovely movie, sweet, touching, poignant, and mysterious The casting was impeccable. Ian McKelllen plays the great detective in his Sixties (in the early 20th century) and in his Nineties (1947), both parts to perfection.
Young Milo Parker plays the precocious young schoolboy Roger who gave the old Holmes suffering from dementia a reason to keep living. Even American Laura Linney played Roger's barely-literate war-widowed mother and Holmes housekeeper (and antagonist) as though she was English.
The director and screenwriter employ the literary conceit of having Dr. Watson (long-dead by 1947) write all those stories that turned Holmes into a celebrity, creating an opportunity for Holmes to write one last story (that will finally get him in touch with his emotions) before Death takes him.
It worked brilliantly. They also setup the ending beautifully to provide for the possibility that the Sherlock Holmes mysteries will live on after the great old detective passes.
