Review of Moonlight Whispers (1999) by Alyssa N — 10 Aug 2008
Most melodramatic stories of teenage unrequited love do little to pique my curiosity, let alone provoke an emotional response, but this movie did both. It stands out from the crowd because it's about S&M, but rather than being there for humor or sensationalism, the submissive tendencies of the protagonist are portrayed in a very real and sensitive manner that anyone who's ever had trouble accepting themselves can relate to.
But neither is his reluctant girlfriend meant to be the villain, as her fears are presented in a way that's easy to understand. It's exactly because of this strong sense of realism that I found the ending to be disappointing, as it was simply too extreme to be believable.
But that won't stop me from watching this movie again if I ever get the chance.
