Review of Mona Lisa (1986) by Al M — 22 Jan 2011
This is early film from Neil Jordan represents a compelling neo-noir thriller with an absolutely riveting performance from Bob Hoskins. Hoskins plays a mafia lackey who is assigned to be the chauffeur of a high-price call-girl.
He is separated from his wife and attempting to keep up a relationship with his daughter. She was once a lowly prostitute who was beaten regularly by her pimp. Both are running from their pasts and find a connection with one another.
Heartbreakingly predictable, Mona Lisa is still an entertaining and character-driven piece of noir cinema that may smack a bit too much of sentimentalism but nonetheless manages to be an effective exploration of how the past influences our identities.
