Review of Miracle at St. Anna (2008) by Mark W — 18 Feb 2009
This is a very ambitious, complex and long movie - but it works! The acting is mostly good, despite the scale of the project and the fact that it happens in at least three different languages.
Although most of the story is set in Italy in 1944, it flows well between 1980's New York and ties up just about all the loose ends by the finish.
I doubt this got any Oscar nominations but compared to a potential winner like "The Dark Knight", this movie is leaps and bounds ahead, if only for the intriguing story line.
If you can handle 2 hours and 46 minutes of an actual story, then I can't recommend this movie enough.
Some parts are a little gory - not quite on the scale of 'Saving Private Ryan' but bordering on that - this shouldn't put you off though, if you want to watch a well put together movie, with a thoughtful back story and mostly satisfying climax.
