Review of Miami Vice (2006) by Andrew S — 21 Aug 2012
I think this is one of the greatest crime movies of all time. It ranks up there with another favorite diamond in the rough, "To Live and Die in LA". The plot is familiar from the Miami Vice TV series-- detectives fall in love with mistress/daughter of bad guy, take down bad guy's operation in tragic betrayal of new girlfriend.
As I remember, every episode of the old show stuck close to the formula. But it doesn't matter-- we watched the old series for its visual style, choreography and wonderful atmosphere. The movie improves on these in every way with its beautiful action sequences, gorgeous photography, sexiness, tightly integrated sound track and wonderful dramatic set pieces.
The transparency of the plot is a necessary part of the formula. I just loved it. It took everything great about the TV series and made it better.
