Review of Merantau (2009) by David D — 16 Nov 2011
The usual story elements are present in this martial arts tale set in Jakarta. It benefits from solid acting (much better than many martial arts films) and a different fighting style than that familiar from so many other martial arts films.
The fight scenes are fast, furious and realistic. The script contains nothing particularly original or different from loads of other martial arts movies, except for the situation being provided by the custom of merentau (a sort of Indonesian walkabout), but the screenplay is well written.
The three principal villains are quite nasty and thoroughly believable. Really a very entertaining action drama.
