Review of Me and Orson Welles (2008) by Jonathan H — 21 Dec 2009
This is a nice little movie that is full of surprises. Guess what? Zac Efron can act. But the real show stealer here is newcomer Christian McKay. Anybody who is familiar with Orson Welles or any of his masterpieces will get goosebumps watching McKay tackle this enigma.
It's a huge task to fill the shoes of a man as iconic as Welles, and McKay pulls it off. Hopefully the Academy will recognize this small film enough to get him a nomination. As for the film itself, Linklater aptly directs it and captures the charms of the 1930's setting.
The story is somewhat predictable, save for the ending, but is a joy to watch nonetheless. I thought Claire Danes was a little weak, and I wish Eddie Marsan had a bigger role. He can be scary good given the right material (Happy Go-Lucky).
