Review of Marwencol (2010) by Vincent G — 02 May 2011
"... I chickened out... I wanted to wear my heels.".
Beaten almost to death because he admitted to being a cross-dresser in a bar, Mark Hogancamp had to rebuild his life. But after he ran out of medical insurance, he had to give up his physical therapy & treatment. So he created his own form of self- therapy at home: he takes photos of an imaginary WWII town (complete with dolls) he built in his backyard to help him deal with the trauma & rebuild his memory. A local photographer eventually found out about Mark & arranged to have a NYC gallery showing of his Marwencol photographs. Engrossing, but sometimes painful to watch. At PBS.
P/s What I find most fascinating about this case is that the beating caused severe brain damage & erased all of Marks memory, but left his urge to cross-dress intact.
