Review of Maniac (1934) by Chad L — 08 Jun 2012
Yeah ok, Maniac is a movie that's just terrifically horrible, and not always in the best possible ways. It's a hodgepodge of ideas, mostly stemming from Edgar Allan Poe, but the story is hammy and atrocious enough that it doesn't really matter all that much.
I think it's meant to be more of an educational film with some entertainment value to it, but even then it can't even live up to that. It's shockingly bad in places, but I find it sort of fascinating in its badness.
Not out of enjoyment, but just the sheer audacity of its awfulness. That, to me, is reason enough to see it. You might also want to check out the Rifftrax version as it does provide some comedic value.
Just remember, it's definitely not for anyone with a low tolerance for crap.
