Review of Man About Dog (2004) by Nicola D — 13 Apr 2008
Really enjoyable comedy with excellent production values. Paddy Breathnach manages to drag Ireland's film production into the 21st century with a high-tempo, crisply cut direction that marks a first in Irish film-making.
No hint of a grey sullen Irish landscape, 'Man About Dog' is laced with bright colours and colourful characters including the traveller played by Pat Shortt, who is sadly under-used in this. The script itself is lacking in heart, ultimate agenda and sense of risk.
It repeats itself over and over and by the end of it, I thought, if I never hear the words 'mo chara' again, it'll be too soon. The script does let down what could have been an amazing Irish film, but as it is, it's funny and action-packed and well worth a watch.
