Review of Maléfique (2003) by Jason J — 30 Jan 2010
A great little French drama/horror movie set in a prison. 4 prisoners find an old diary which has been wedged inside the wall of their cell. It contains some strange drawings and the text is in a couple of different languages. They find out that it belonged to a prisoner in the 1920's who used dark magic spells to escape from his cell. They decide to try and recite the spells inside the journal for their own means of escape.
A very intriguing atmospheric movie. I'd read that this was a horror movie but it's more of a mystery one dealing with the occult more than anything else. There is a little bit of gore but not a lot. Despite the fact that the whole movie takes place inside a claustrophobic cell you never get bored watching it. The characters are all interesting and you root behind them in their quest to escape. I love the brilliant twist at the end, very unexpected. Malefique is an effective chiller despite the slow start. Stick with it and you'll find that it does deliver.
