Review of Lucky Luciano (1973) by Mike M — 10 Dec 2007
Something of an oddity in the career of Francesco Rosi - and yet an indication of how the director's sober style of reportage could do something distinctive within even the confines of a genre piece.
Notionally based on the final years of mobster Salvatore "Lucky" Lucania, this gets the machine gunning in restaurants out of the way early on to work on something more considered: both a useful history lesson, and a gangster movie that moves in several directions at once.
