Review of Lovesong (2017) by Tatsuhito K — 22 Nov 2017
I've been thinking about this film since I first saw it back in February. It's a shame that people aren't talking about this beautiful and quietly heartbreaking film. Riley Keough gives by far my favorite performance of the year as a lonely stay-at-home mother who is longing for human connection.
She delivers so much through the glances and body language, and her chemistry with Jena Malone is so electrifying that you won't be able to take your eyes off of them. It is beautifully shot and beautifully acted, the dialogue is sparse but feels very natural (I wonder if some of it was improvised), and there are so many beautiful silent moments throughout the film that I just love.
Watching it the second time around was just as powerful and emotional as the first time viewing. It is one of my favorite films of 2017.
