Review of Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown (2008) by Trent R — 14 May 2010
With plenty of good visuals, and some interesting interview subjects, this is a pretty good introduction to the man behind the stories. Lovecraft, who is pretty much the father of modern horror, as Poe is the father of suspense, is a complicated figure.
I think this documentary does a pretty good job of looking at him from multiple angles. Some of the interviewees clearly have their own somewhat extreme take on the man, but the film lets you hear each idea without necessarily passing judgment on them.
If you're a fan of the stories, this is a good look at some of what went into writing them. If you haven't read the stories, you should.
