Review of Lola Montès (1955) by Jacob G — 09 Oct 2010
Lola Montes is a rare example of a film by a master craftsman with a large scale budget to create an absolutely stunning film. The film has only recently been brought back as close as possible to the director's original vision after being seriously modified upon its release after the studio feared the film would lose money.
The story itself as the title would suggest is about Lola Montes, a woman not adverse to scandal, a dancer and mistress of Ludwig I of Bavaria, who would make her a Countess. Her life to this point is recounted by emcee (Ustinov) in a circus setting as Lola herself is the main attraction.
Outstanding camerawork around stunning costumes and sets makes this film an incredible feast for the eyes. A truly imaginative way of creating a biopic. A must see.
