Review of Little Women (2018) by Alana L — 29 Sep 2018
My mother and I saw this movie yesterday and overall it was pretty enjoyable, but ultimately Little Women is lacking diversity and an actual modern flare. Someone should've clued the director into the fact that in 2018, an entire straight white cast doesn't make for a compelling film.
The plot was good-it's Little Women beat for beat with minor adjustments to "modernize" the story. But it's also well known that Jo's character was based off of Louisa May Alcott who is also well known to have been a lesbian. The film is lacking an actual grasp on modern entertainment. Everything could've remained exactly the same if only Freddie was a woman and there was at least one minority (maybe the manny, Brook, would've been a good option).
As is, Little Women is only a good film to watch if you've 1. Read the book, and 2. Are a heterosexual white woman who is uninterested in diversity in film.
