Review of Léolo (1992) by Diego B — 23 Dec 2008
Brilliant, brutal, gentle, heart-warming and disgusting coming-of-age dark-black comedy. At times this movie feels like someone has stretched the final second leading up to a gruesome train-wreck, that happens to be the punchline to a rather funny joke, in to a feature-length film.
Like you are watching Leo's life flash before his eyes, the good, the bad and the funny. This movie is absolutely not for the frigid at heart or rigid in mind or morals. It is not for children. If you are offended by anything, it will be this movie.
If you can handle that and don't recoil at movies that are more cerebral than pithy or feel-good, this movie may just become one of your favorites. I guarantee after seeing this once or twice, you will have a very strong opinion about it.
Score, cinematography, directing and acting are perfect, to boot.
