Review of Lamerica (1994) by Andrea C — 17 Jan 2008
Lamerica is a prime example of the kind of slow-paced drama we have come to expect from Amelio. After Il ladro di bambini, Amelio shifted his focus from an internal examination of Italian bureaucracy to the Albanian crisis.
Amelio cleverly links the Albanian experience in the early 1990s with that of the Southern Italian population during World War II not only through the theme of emigration, but also through the character of the displaced Italian that the politically naïve Gino seeks to manipulate.
The Italy of Lamerica is both a predatory one, but one which ultimately represents a land of hope (or America) to the post-Communist Albanian population.
