Review of Lacombe, Lucien (1974) by Ben W — 03 Oct 2008
Louis malle has the perfect touch for this film. incredibly nuanced, beautifully shot, deeply felt. blaise is spectacular in the title role. ive heard some people try to read this as allegory. I think that is painfully juvenile and too easy.
this is a film that challenges us to relate, to empathize with someone we are, in a sense, prone to empathize with simply given his position in the narrative, but find it incredibly difficult to do given his repeated actions that seem worthy of judgment.
simply excellent film.
