Unlike many "sex symbols," Raquel Welch can actually act, and after putting in her time in parts that featured her physique more than her talent, she started choosing her own roles, and this was one of them.

While the movie itself is dated and not Oscar material, it does show Welch doing very well playing a very unglamorous role (watch her chomping her gum during the National Anthem).
