Review of Juan of the Dead (2011) by Tim N — 07 Oct 2012
This is a highly enjoyable film from Cuba that will undoubtedly draw comparisons to the similar Shaun of the Dead. That's not all that bad of a thing as it is some pretty decent company to keep. Juan does however lack the out and out comedy of Shaun, but gives us a little social and political commentary in it's place.
Not to say that Juan doesn't have it's comedic moments, it certainly does. And some of the social issues raised by the film will be lost on those unfamiliar with life in Cuba. Even if you don't get the undercurrents of the film, there is still plenty of zombie carnage of offbeat comedy to please horror, and specifically horror-comedy fans.
If you like zombies and horror with humour, this film is worth a look.
