Completely and utterly wonky Journey to The West is ridicilous and way over the top. But if you enjoy Stephen Chow's movies (Shaolin Monks, Kung Fu Hustle) you can see this is just another masterpiece of work from him.
Told and filmed like the fairytale it is, West gives vibrant characters, crazy villains, and a core story and lesson that goes across many cultural bounds, both chinese and indian (Buddism). Yes it's super silly but it really is a fun and beautiful picture, kind of like a chinese Neverending Story, 25 years after the fact.
