Review of Jerichow (2009) by Lavinia Z — 22 Mar 2009
A perfectly well-executed genre exercise that remakes (again) "The Postman Always Rings Twice." In its combination of capitalist zeal run amok, desperate sexual passions combined with desperate economic straits, and the complications that ensue when violence is pursued as a salve for life's stickier problems, Cain's novel seems to have hit on themes universal enough to be adapted for the screen for as long as movies are made.
Here, the melodramatic elements of the plot are underplayed by the film's stellar cast, and the twist ending offers a nice surprise. It does seem unlikely, though, that any human as handsome as Benno Furmann could really find themselves down to their last dime the way this film's protagonist, Thomas, does.
Couldn't he just get a gig as an underwear model, or, you know, an actor?
