Review of Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1976) by Kevin C — 04 Oct 2009
A masterpiece; sheer perfection. The film is impossibly simple in its premise: a housewife, Jeanne Dielman, goes through her monotonous daily routine. But the wondrous nature of the film is this: the viewer is left to study Jeanne, and study her intently.
Such a voyeuristic action is why the film is so beautiful--by examining Jeanne, looking at every facial expression, noticing her body language, the viewer begins to piece together who Jeanne is, what she's thinking, and even her motivations behind what she's doing.
It's disturbingly brilliant, and wholly remarkable; a masterstroke from director Chantal Akerman.
