The previous entry (JASON TAKES MANHATTAN) was utterly horrible. But in the first five minutes of JASON GOES TO HELL, it's clear that this is NOT going to be another formulaic turd. Jason is literally blown to pieces almost immediately.
Jump-scares are deliberately set up and then ignored as if to ridicule the genre. Suddenly the rules of the franchise are rewritten, breathing new life into a stale series. A surprise ending ends things on a high note.
This is a shockingly great movie and a highlight of the franchise.
