With quite a few meta levels going on and some obvious autobiographical and self-reflectory features, Irma Vep is hardly meant to be taken too seriously. Stylistically, Irma Vep definitely pays tribute to the nouvelle vague, while from the point of view of content it makes a mockery of the self-absorbed tendencies in French cinema that sprung from it.

Jean-Pierre Leaud's parodic take on the self-obsessed director is just great and Maggie Cheung, even though she seems genuinely lost at times, carries herself pretty well too.

This review of Irma Vep (1996) was written by on 29 Apr 2009.

Irma Vep has generally received positive reviews.
