That fact that nobody but Joaquin and Casy really know if was a hoaxed hoax or planned hoax makes it stand out. It hard to watch most times because you feel like this true life to its fullest. And few men let alone actors could have gone through what Phoenix went through for well over a year, faked or not.
The letterman show helped really sell the genius at place here.
