Review of I Believe in Unicorns (2015) by Hannah R — 21 Aug 2015
This film gives a confident and focused gaze on a teenage girl coming of age -- Davina. For this, Meyerhoff is doing something truly daring. Plot twists are not used to turn away from the emotional turmoil, joy, and complexity of this time of life.
She is inventive in her approach--creating two parallel stories, one is Davina's internal world of myth where Princesses, Unicorns, and Princes reside. The other is the stark reality that she seeks to escape: the solitary life of taking care of her ill-mother.
To escape she chases the mercurial heart of Sterling. An original take on a road-trip film--this film is as beautiful to watch as it is gritty and heartbreaking. "I Believe in Unicorns" bodes well for Meyerhoff's career.
I hope she continues to examine feminine desire, imagination, and action in future projects.
