Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Venita C — 06 Jun 2007
My youthful idealism took a hit with this distressing documentary about two inner city boys trying to make it to the NBA as a way out of the ghetto. The most heart-wrenching aspect of this film? The FACT that the same debilitating challenges face today's inner city youth.
Perpetual social and racial inequities ensure that the William Gates's and Arthur Agee's of America keep right on comin'. What's to be done about the narrow dreams of young low-income black males? Why are pro sports the only ticket out?
